The precision battery monitor BMV-712 continuously monitors the status of your battery. Battery current and voltage are continuously measured. With this data, the current state of charge of your battery is accurately calculated and provides a reliable value, so you always know how much energy is still available.

With integrated Bluetooth

With its built-in Bluetooth, the BMV Smart is ready for the age of the Internet of Things (IoT). Most other Victron Energy products also feature Bluetooth. Wireless communication between products simplifies system installation and improves performance. The Victron Connect app can be downloaded for free from the Victron homepage, the App Store, or Google Play.

By integrating the Bluetooth interface into the monitor, the VE.Direct interface is free for other uses, for example, to connect the BMV to the Color Control GX.

Standard battery monitor functions:

  • Displays battery voltage, current, power, consumed ampere-hours, and state of charge
  • Displays remaining runtime at current discharge rate
  • Programmable visual and audible alarm
  • Programmable potential-free switching contact that switches when a settable state of charge or a specific battery voltage is reached, e.g., to switch off non-essential loads or to switch on a generator if necessary or to perform other actions, and of course switches back when a programmable switching threshold is reached.
  • High current measurement resolution 10 mA (0.01 A)
  • Wide input voltage range: 9.5 – 95V
  • A 500 Ampere quick-connect shunt and a connection kit
  • Shunt capacity up to 10,000 Amperes optionally available
  • VE.Direct communication port
  • Stores a wide range of historical data that can be used to assess usage patterns and battery condition (historical values).

How it works:

Battery capacity is measured in ampere-hours (Ah). For example, a battery that delivers 5A of current over a period of 20 hours has a capacity of 100 Ah (5x20=100). The BMV continuously measures the current flow into and out of the battery and calculates the amount of energy supplied or consumed from it. However, since the effective capacity of a battery also depends on age, discharge current, and temperature, a simple consideration of ampere-hours is not sufficient. For example, if a 100 Ah battery is discharged in two hours, it only has a usable capacity of 56 Ah due to the high discharge current.

Apparently, the battery capacity is almost halved. This phenomenon is called Peukert's efficiency. In addition, the capacity is further reduced by high or very low temperatures. Therefore, simple recording of ampere-hours or voltage values is not sufficient to assess the state of charge of a battery. The BMV battery monitor displays both the actually discharged Ah and the current state of charge corrected with Peukert coefficient and charge efficiency. By observing the state of charge, the battery condition can be best assessed. The value is given in percent, where 100% means fully charged and 0% means completely empty. This can be compared to the fuel gauge in a car.

Mid-point voltage monitoring

This function, often used in industry to monitor large and expensive battery banks, is now available for the first time at a more affordable price, allowing any battery bank to be monitored. A battery bank consists of a series string of cells. The mid-point voltage is the voltage at the halfway point of the string. Ideally, the mid-point voltage is exactly half of the total voltage. In practice, however, deviations occur. These depend on numerous factors, such as a different state of charge in new batteries or cells, different temperatures, internal leakage currents, capacities, and many more.
Large or increasing deviations in the mid-point voltage indicate improper battery maintenance or a faulty battery or cell. Corrective measures following a mid-point voltage alarm can prevent serious damage to an expensive battery. Please also refer to the manual for more information.

Easy programming

A quick installation menu and a detailed scrollable setup menu assist the user when making various settings. Please refer to the manual for more details.
